The teaching of phonics and early reading

Phonics teaching follows the progression outlined in ‘Letters and Sounds’. Children in Foundation 2, Year 1 and Year 2 have daily focussed sessions in each class, supported by homework activities. Some children receive additional support for phonics if they find this aspect of learning difficult.

We use Oxford Reading Tree materials and materials from other schemes to support the teaching of early reading skills. Home reading and guided reading materials are colour banded and matched to the phonic phases to support progression.

There is an annual meeting for parents and carers which provides an introduction to phonics and we publish supporting materials in our school planner.
